Overview
If receiving an invitation to a black tie event calls for formality, then turning up in the right dress code is mark of a gentlemen’s respect. That doesn’t mean you have to don a black uniform like everyone else — there are creative and charming ways to personalise your outfit to suit your style.
In case you may be wondering, the answer is yes. Yes, as literal as it sounds, you’ll need a black tie (or bow tie) to attend the event. Let’s run through some guidelines for better understanding.
What Is A Black Tie Attire?
In history books, a black tie attire dates back to the Edwardian era as a “traditional dinner suit with a short front jacket and full tails at the rear”. Then King Edward VII swapped it for a dinner jacket by cutting off the tails and lengthening the front as he often dined on his own and wanted a more casual suit.
This attire became set in stone for formal functions with “Black Tie” for the British and “Tuxedo” for the Americans.
In today’s context, the strict rules of this dress code have relaxed such that you may even get away with a coloured suit, depending on how refined the event invite is.
For ladies, traditionally you’d be expected to turn up in a floor-length gown. These days, you have the option to suit up in a chic tuxedo in velvet or silk. You’ll look prim and proper in covered-toe shoes such as loafers or dress heels and polished pumps that are at least 3 inch tall.
For gentlemen, check out our classic range of tuxedo (single or double breasted) that is most popular for formal dinner events. Match that with a sharp bow tie and a fine pair of patent pumps or polished Oxfords in black.
Note: A black business suit simply does not cut it.
Speaking of dinner jackets, always go for peak or shawl lapels. Notch lapels are considered less formal to the extent of bad form in some circles. We highly recommend wearing wing-collar shirts secured by cufflinks for extra stud factor.
Dinner trousers are designed without belt loops because belts are frowned upon. Look sleek while keeping your pants up with suspenders or braces.
If you are one to experiment with fabrics and patterns, be sure to check out our Velvet Tuxedo Collection or Jacquard Tuxedo Collection.
